Vegetable Vendor Meets Picasso

Vegetable Vendor Meets Picasso

9" x 12" Sue Dove’s book "Painting with Stitches" has been a tremendous inspiration to me. I love her free embroidery technique and have done several pieces of my own design using her technique, on canvas. This takes me a lot of time to do, so I started out with a familiar Picasso painting as the inspiration – but then the vegetable vendor took over with her basket perched on its rest of twisted cloth, her hair in a bun and her jimki earring... But she is still eyeing Picasso!

I picked up these toddler overalls at a thrift shop. They called out to be celebrated with bling. I like to go “over the top” with garment embellishment, but who can wear so much junk?! All those bits and pieces I have in my collection – bought, gifted, hoarded – I had a blast! Beads and buttons, charms and tacky plastic flowers, even a Rajasthani skirt ornament, all found their place on this piece. The only thing is, I kept picking up more junk and now need several overalls (and time!) to use them all. The hanger was decorated with more junk and I love how the large beaded tassels balance the whole piece.
